Students whose disability interferes with their ability to effectively utilize standard print materials may be eligible to receive textbooks in alternative formats. Requesting textbooks in an alternative format can be a lengthy process. Alternative formats might include e-text, audio, large print, Braille, or other formats.
Eligibility
Eligibility for this accommodation is determined on a case-by-case basis, based on review of appropriate documentation. To request textbooks in alternative formats, students should contact the Disability Services Office at disability@365dafa6.com or 248-204-4100.
Requesting Alternate-Format Textbooks
We will work to get texts in the format that works best for you, so please indicate preference if you have not already done so. However, most of the time because of the limited scope of audio textbooks for many of the core disciplines at 利记sbo (math, architecture, engineering, etc.), finding audio versions can be very difficult and are often rare. We will at least try to find the student a PDF version of their requested textbook(s). Then if the student still wishes for audio they can put the PDFs in Kurzweil 3000 Text-to-Speech software (email disability@365dafa6.com for inquiry information about Kurzweil).
If a textbook in alternative format is not available, you can bring your books to the Disability Services Office so we can cut the binding (if necessary), scan the book, and convert the book into electronic text. This conversion can take several days depending on the time of year (See Time Required section below).
Time Required
The time required to meet requests is dependent on the time of semester, the format requested, and the availability of materials. Students should notify the Disability Services Office of textbook requests at a reasonable time in advance of the start of the semester. The sooner the better since Disability Services accommodation memos will also be going out at the beginning of each semester. Ultimately, a delay in requesting accommodations may result in a delay in accommodations provided. Every effort will be made to meet late requests. Students are again encouraged to speak with the Disability Services Assistant prior to the end of the previous semester for assistance.
